Access the applicable documents from the NLA – SA website. After reading document NLA-CP-MC-I-10, download the application form NLA-CP-MC-F-XX for the relevant field of metrology. Complete the form using MS Word and ensure a suitable portfolio of evidence, following the guidelines which can be found in documents NLA-CP-MC-I-16 and NLA-CP-MC-I-19, is compiled. Submit the completed application form and portfolio of evidence (in software format) to metcert@nla.org.za.
Your application will be administratively reviewed to confirm that the application form is complete and that the portfolio of evidence adequately supports the claims made in the application form.
Should this not be the case, you will be informed directly and given an opportunity to correct any shortcomings.
Once this step is completed, your application will be forwarded to a technical evaluator selected for the associated field of metrology for a technical evaluation of the practical task evidence.
Should there be any shortcomings at this stage, you will be informed directly and given an opportunity to rectify them.
Applicants are only allowed two iterations to correct shortcomings after which they are required to wait for a compulsory waiting period, before re-applying.
Once a positive recommendation is received from the Evaluator, the application is sent to the Certification Committee who review the recommendation decision made by the Evaluator and if in agreement, certify the applicant.
A certificate is then prepared for the applicant and is available for collection from the NLA offices.
Note, applications for re-certification should be made at least 3 months prior to the expiry date of the current certificate
It could be, however due to the large number of different metrology disciplines involved, the costs of paying examiners and moderators would be excessive and result in increased cost of MetCert certification.

Your application and portfolio of evidence will be evaluated to confirm that the CPD points claimed in the application form, are adequately demonstrated by the portfolio of evidence.
The recommendation from this process is then sent to the Certification Committee for ratification. If in agreement, a certificate will be issued and will be available for collection from the NLA offices.
Registration schemes applicable in these disciplines which do not evaluate competence, must not be confused with certification schemes, such as MetCert, which evaluate ongoing competence.

“CPD” points (Continuous Professional Development points) is simply a mechanism to measure the extent to which a re-certification applicant meets the requirements of having participated in the choice of activities required to have an existing MetCert certificate renewed for a further three-year period.
An applicant requires a total of 15 CPD points, made up of 9 Work-based points and 6 Individual Development points, to be re-certified.

MetCert certified metrologists have a one-year grace period, after the expiry date of their current certificate, in which to accumulate the required 15 CPD points and submit an application for re-certification. In this situation it must be noted that the new certificate will only be valid for three-years from the expiry date of the previous certificate.
Should an applicant delay their re-certification until after the one-year grace period, they will be forced to apply for MetCert as an initial applicant and none of the evidence submitted for their previous initial application will be acceptable for re-submission.
The MetCert Metrologist certification scheme is a personnel certification operated independently from SANAS by the NLA – SA. In addition, SANAS relies on MetCert certification to be an independent verification of on-going base-line competence. If SANAS evaluates this competence, it would defeat this objective.
A tertiary qualification is not a demonstration of on-going competence as a metrologist, which is a requirement of MetCert. However, some CPD points can be earned for the successful completion of modules towards, and the achievement of, a tertiary qualification.
CPD points can now be earned through a much wider variety of activities, many of which are available on-line and therefore not limited by an applicant’s geographical location.
Participation in independently organised PT can be a demonstration of personal competence. The competence demonstrated is the same irrespective of whether the PT is local or international.
Yes, they can but the number of CPD points awarded are less than for “approved” training.
A maximum number of 3 additional points can be accumulated over the three-year period however these points will only be used to make up any shortfall for the following three-year certification period whereafter they will expire.
STC membership is limited to selected metrologists. Therefore, not all metrologists can earn CPD points from STC meeting attendance. Furthermore, some metrologists are members of several STCs. The MetCert Scheme Committee therefore thought that this reduced number of CPD points awarded for STC meeting attendance was a fairer allocation. The maximum number of CPD points which can be earned through STC meeting attendance has now also been capped.
